Launched by scientists for the scientists!
Dear Reader!
Pensoft Publishers was conceived during the Christmas/New Year festivities of 1993-94, when Penev and Golovatch, with families, were enjoying Bulgarian wine and food at a southern Bulgarian resort. It was then that the idea came to us, that we should cooperate in a publishing venture - active scientists publishing for other active scientists! It occurred to us that, in the publishing area of environmental/life sciences, wherein lay our expertise, there was clearly an empty niche begging occupation.
This involved bringing, by means of publication, the work of the top flight names and minds of eastern Europe to the attention of western workers, and vice-versa. In short, we decided to emphasis the basic cosmopolitanism of science, the rapidly developing global communication system, and our own expertise, at home and abroad, in research and publication policies.
We largely perform our activities in English, with only a minor fraction of our own (co)publications being in French, German, Russian or Bulgarian.
In less than 10 years, Pensoft has become the leading Publisher and Bookseller of natural science books in Eastern Europe and Russia. As booksellers and agents, we have expanded our areas of interest from Zoology, Botany, Earth and Environmental Sciences, to encompass also Mathematics, Physics, History, Archaeology, Linguistics, Business, Finance, etc.
Hence much of the very often, mostly unwillingly neglected treasure represented by Russian or Bulgarian or other East European/Balkan literature in various branches of natural, medical and humanitarian sciences has been opened to the western reader and become accessible due to our efforts.
While we continue to offer numerous out of print titles, mainly Russian and Bulgarian, to the western reader, we are now increasingly involved in the reverse flow of western publications to eastern Europe. Thus we are fulfilling our mission to act as a bridge between East and West!
A remarkable trend in our development of the last years is the increased number of academic and popular science manuscripts coming to us from all around the world - Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, UK, USA and many others. The reader may wish to have a look at our latest releases at http://www.pensoft.net/newreleases.
Another remarkable event from the last years is that Pensoft has been involved as a publisher in European Union FP6 Integrated Project ALARM - Assessing Large Scale Environmental Risks for Biodiversity with Tested Methods (http://www.alarm-project.ufz.de/index.php?de=5085) There are several more current project application we are involved in as well.
We are authorised publishers and/or distributors for a wide range of academician institutions in various countries of the world. Yet we can claim to have become a firmly established, fully international, company encompassing an almost global market as well. This has become possible also through a joint venture, NHBS Russo-Asiatic, we have launched together with NHBS Mailorder Bookstore, the world's largest concern and leader in supplying books in various fields of natural history and environmental sciences (www.nhbs.com/russo-asiatic.html), who authorised us exclusive supplier for all regions covered by the former Soviet Union, Eastern European countries and Central Asia. All publishers from the above regions are kindly invited to contact Pensoft offering their titles to be included in NHBS R-A.
Among the institutions we publish for and/or distribute their publications are: Museum National de Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France; Institute for African Studies, Tervuren, Belgium; Geneva, Karlsruhe, Severtsov Institute for Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
