Biodiversity biosystematics, and ecology of Canadian Coleoptera.
This volume includes fourteen research articles on Canadian
Coleoptera, mainly on the families Staphylinidae, Leiodidae,
Histeridae, Nitidulidae, Cucujidae, Phalacridae, Silvanidae,
Laemophloeidae, Tetratomidae, several aquatic groups, and others. An
introductory editorial traces the history of scientific research and
indicates areas of future inquiry. The papers address various
questions with respect to the distribution, dispersal,
zoogeographical status, phenology, and bionomics of Canadian
Coleoptera, the role of saproxylic beetles in forest ecosystems, and
invasive species in native habitats. The answers to these questions
have important economic and environmental consequences. The book is
addressed to coleopterists, ecologists, biogeographers, and
conservationists.

Catalogue of Aleocharinae Rove Beetles of Canada and Alaska (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae)
Gouix, N Klimaszewski, J
The first comprehensive catalogue of difficult to identify and poorly known Canadian and Alaskan aleocharine rove beetles is presented. Aleocharine rove beetles represent one of the great monophyletic radiations in the history of life. This radiation is characterized by diverse habitat, microecological and behavioural specialization in various lineages. Their small size, strongly flexible body, defensive strategies, excellent mobility and their ability to adapt to various microhabitats enabled them to compete with other arthropods and succeed. This catalogue is meant to bridge the gap in our knowledge and provide the most recent list of synonyms and valid species occurring in Canada and Alaska in a classification that reflects the current state of knowledge. In total, 387 valid species classified in 92 genera and 14 tribes, and 351 synonyms and 6 uncertain records are reported. Compiled information is provided on the tribes, genera, species and synonyms with references to the original descriptions for genera and species, the status of each species, references to revision and monographic publication if applicable, and a summary of current distribution of valid species. There are 312 references on the subject and 102 colour images of species representing genera included in the catalogue. The authors hope that this publication will stimulate further efforts to unravel the history of Canadian and Alaskan rove beetles fauna.

A Treatise on the Western Hemisphere Caraboidea (Coleoptera). Their classification, distributions, and ways of life. Volume I (Trachypachidae, Carabidae - Nebriiformes 1)
Erwin, TL
A synthesis of the classification, distributions, and ways of life of the ground-beetles (Coleoptera: Caraboidea) dwelling in the Western Hemisphere. Under each taxon account, the historical nomenclature, distribution at the country and/or state/province level, and way of life, including Macrohabitat, Microhabitat, Dispersal abilities, Seasonal occurrence, and Behavior are elaborated. Selected references for each taxon are given in these categories and an extensive, nearly complete bibliography of Caraboidea references for the Western Hemisphere is presented. The sections on way of life include the following: Macrohabitat summary, altitudinal distribution in meters, as well as a general altitudinal classification, habitat/microhabitat details, seasonality, and under Behavior notes on diel activity, adult/larval hibernation, prey items, immatures, over wintering, and other notes on behavior are presented. Details of dispersal power, or the capability of dispersal, i.e. wing condition, flight data, walking, running, burrowing and climbing records, as far as is known is included. Species introduced are noted with their probable area of origin. This work, planned as a seven volume companion to Larochelle & Lariviere (2003), will be an indispensable tool for anybody interested in ground-beetles per se and their natural history, as well as their role in the environment and importance to agriculture, conservation, and forestry. National, regional, and local libraries will find this set of tools well used due to the incredible amount of information that is summarized at these geographical levels. This work follows the classification of Erwin (1984), and the nomenclature of Lorenz (2005), as updated on a six month cycle by Erwin (e-data base, NMNH, Smithsonian Institution).

Annotated Catalogue of the Carabid Beetles of Albania (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
Gueorguiev, B.V.
This catalogue summarizes all available literature records and a lot of new material revised or determined by the author in various European museums and private collections. At present the carabid fauna of Albania can be considered as well-studied. The catalogue includes references to or data for 543 species, 103 genera and 31 tribes of Carabidae. Several dozen taxa of specific or supraspecific rank are added for the first time to the fauna of either the Balkan Peninsula or Albania. A moderate taxonomic contribution based on a study of types, topotypes or series of previously problematic species or subspecies from Albania and the neighbouring countries is also presented; as a result, 38 various taxonomic changes (new synonyms, revalidations, new statuses etc.) are introduced. All species are listed with detailed localities and references. The book is addressed to specialists in coleopterology and entomology, biogeographers and nature conservationists, collectors and all ground beetle lovers.
"Without doubt, this excellent catalogue, compiled with diligence and knowledge, will be an important tool for anyone, not only specialists on Balkan Carabidae, and will improve our insights into the systematics and distribution of carabid beetles. The hope of the author to place Albania with this catalogue side by side to Bulgaria (certainly the best-known regional fauna of Carabidae in the Balkan Peninsula, catalogued in 1995 by the same author and his father) is surely fulfilled." Les Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) des Petites Antilles
Taxonomie, ethologie, biogeographie
F. Chalumeau & J. Touroult
This monograph on the longhorn beetles of the Lesser West Indies (Anguilla to Grenada) and Virgin Islands is the first regional synthesis covering all known species, including those described by the authors. The first part deals with such generalities like habitats and biogeography, phenology, previous studies and methods. The second part represents a monography of the 135 species involved, all keyed, with type locality, taxonomic remarks, diagnosis, variability, distribution, and biology. Most data on the species' distribution and biology, especially host plants relationships, are original. Most of the species have never been illustrated in colour so far.

Contributions to Systematics and Biology of Beetles
Papers celebrating the 80th birthday of Igor Konstantinovich Lopatin
A. Konstantinov, A. Tishechkin & L. Penev (Eds.)
This volume is dedicated to Professor Igor Konstantinovich Lopatin in celebration of his 80th birthday. Igor Konstantinovich is a renown taxonomist, prolific author, innovative biological explorer, and respected teacher who trained hundreds of students and during his professional life was (and still is) an inspiration and a mentor for scores of taxonomists. His tireless enthusiastic work shaped generations of Belarusian zoologists, brought a wide and steady respect of systematics into a local scientific community. But most important, he taught us that collecting and studying beetles, small and big, bright and dull, is a noble thing to do.
Contributions assembled in this volume reflect Lopatin's intellectual breadth and diverse scientific interests. Some dwells on Lopatin's interest in biogeography of arid areas of the Palearctic describing zoogeographic connections between desert faunas of Middle Asia, Iran, and Afghanistan, and leaf beetle fauna of the Hermon Mountains in Israel. Other contributions reflect Lopatin's interest in host plant relationships, e.g. discovery of a rare crucifer in Turkey being eaten by an even rarer flea beetle. Many contributions are revisions and keys for identification in nearly all major groups of beetles. Some are checklists, faunistic notes, ecological studies, and many contain descriptions of new taxa in many beetle families. This book will be an indispensable source of information on beetle taxonomy, diversity, biogeography, and host plant relationships. It will be useful for entomologists, ecologists, extension scientists, entomology students, comparative morphologists and evolutionary biologists working across beetle taxa and anybody interested in beetle identification.

General Distribution of the Flea Beetles in the Palaearctic Subregion (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae: Alticinae). Supplement
B. Gruev & M. Doeberl
This supplement comes not only to correct the inaccuracies and mistakes in the authors' monograph of 1997, but also to update the nomenclature, taxonomy and distribution of the Alticinae, or flea beetles, in the Palaearctic subregion. As a result, 83 names of flea beetles are eliminated, mostly as synonyms, while 113 species are added. So the total number of species or subspecies has increased from 1,358 to 1,388. The following three genera are added to the regional list: Aeschrocnemis, Cyrsylus and Heyrovskya. Blagoi Gruev, born 1936, is a lecturer of general biogeography at the University of Plovdiv, the author of the first textbook on this subject in Bulgaria, who also provided an original biogeographical division of the country. He has described 64 new taxa of Chrysomelidae from various parts of the Palaearctic, Oriental and Afrotropical realms. Manfred Döberl, born 1933, has devoted 40 years of his life to teaching and entomology. He has also described numerous new Palaearctic and Oriental flea beetles, published in more than 30 papers.

Catalogue of the Malaysian Chrysomelidae (Insecta: Coleoptera)
Mohamed S. Mohamedsaid
Presently, taxonomic information on the Chrysomelidae from Malaysia can only be retrieved from a number of sources, such as the Coleopterorum Catalogus, with it latest publication in 1973, and the scattered taxonomic publications found all over the world. Thus, the publication of this catalogue will be a single reference for the taxonomic information from the country. Malaysia comprises of the Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak, the Malaysian territory in Borneo. This catalogue will present a current taxonomic status of the Chrysomelidae, not only from Malaysia, but also from other parts of Borneo, which are under the sovereignty of Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia (Kalimantan).
The catalogue of the Malaysian Chrysomelidae is a comprehensive one, both for Malaysia as well as Borneo. There are 1073 species and 215 genera belonging to 13 subfamilies listed in the catalogue. Out of this 1073 species, 635 and 621 are recorded from Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia, respectively. Each species is provided with scientific name, synonyms references and distributional data. Illustrated Catalogue of the Genus Carabus of the World (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
Thierry Deuve
The genus Carabus, described by Linnaeus in 1758, is widely distributed, comprising 853 species from the temperate regions of Europe, North Africa, Asia and North America. Due to their elegant forms and often sumptuous colours, these beetles are amongst the most often collected insects. They also provide precious material for scientists interested in the geographical variation of a natural group and the ways in which it has evolved.
The Illustrated Catalogue of the genus Carabus of the World is a continuation of the catalogues published by the same author in 1991 and 1994. However, this new edition is more than a simple update, being considerably augmented by information on type localities of taxa and with drawings of the male aedeagus for all the species and the main subspecies, which often allow their identification. The type species of each subgenus is illustrated by a colour photograph. A new classification is proposed, taking into account recent work on the morphology of adults and larvae, along with published DNA analyses.
Running to over 400 pages and with more than 1200 figures, this richly illustrated work covers the whole nomenclature of the genus Carabus. Following a summary of the morphological characteristics of these insects, the author discusses at length the different classifications that have been proposed and considers our present knowledge of the phylogeny of the genus, with particular reference to molecular analyses. The catalogue proper follows with a classification of the taxa in systematic sequence. For each species, information is given on its general distribution, a classification of the subspecies, the corresponding lists of synonyms and homonyms, the type localities of the taxa and at least one drawing of the aedeagus.
The author is a world-renowned specialist of the comparative morphology and phylogeny of insects at the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris. Based on his studies of material from all the major museums of the world, he has published more than 150 scientific papers on the genus Carabus. His 30 expeditions to the mountains of Asia (China, Himalayas, Central Asia, Iran, Lebanon and Turkey) has allowed him to discover many new species and to study first-hand the geographical variation of these insects in the field.

The Genus Carabus L. in Europe.
A synthesis.
Turin, H., Penev L., Casale A. (Eds.)
The ground beetle genus Carabus (Coleoptera, Carabidae) is one of the most intensively studied groups of insects. For more than 200 years a huge amount of data has been accumulated on taxonomy, biology, phylogeny, ecology and biogeography. From the start in 1989, the aim of the project was to present a complete European summary, combining data from both Western and Eastern Europe. The results are presented to the scientific community in the form of a thorough and attractive book, which will be indispensable in the field of entomology, ecology and biogeography.

A Catalogue of the Jewel Beetles of Bulgaria (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)
Sakalian, VP
The book presents in a consistent form all known published and field research information concerning Bulgarian Buprestidae. A cartographic system based on UTM grid has been used for the presentation of species distribution. The species accounts comprise general distribution, localities in Bulgaria, larval host-plants, and taxonomic remarks. Maps and data presented in the catalogue allow quick and easy analysis of the type and structure of the species ranges and the current level of research. This information may help in the future selection of the species and areas for protection, serve as a basis for monitoring of the endangered species, and should enable evaluation of the areas in terms of faunal richness.

Special Topics in Leaf Beetle Biology
David G. Furth (Ed.)
This book is primarily the result of the Leaf Beetle research presented at the Fifth International Symposium on the Chrysomelidae, held on 25-27 July 2000 in conjunction with the XXI International Congress of Entomology, in Iguassu Falls, Brazil. It is a collection of papers by leading experts on Leaf Beetles from over 15 countries discussing their research on all 5 major continents concerning systematics, diversity, phylogeny, biology, ecology, genetics, etc. This compilation on such diverse topics about Chrysomelidae is dedicated to Dr. P. H. A. Jolivet who is a kind of grandfather to all the world's Leaf Beetle workers. Some chapters discuss biological diversity of the primary tropical rainforests of Costa Rica, Panama, Brazil and Central and East Africa and other chapters discuss the biodiversity in the Nepalese Himalayas, Central Europe, etc. The papers cover almost all the Leaf Beetle subfamilies in the broad sense with special detailed treatment of 9 of these subfamilies. Some papers use morphology to consider the classification of certain groups, whereas molecular DNA studies are used for other groups. In some chapters immatures are treated morphologically and in others their natural enemies are discussed. Host plant diversity and choice are considered as well as feeding behavior. Chemical defense is interestingly discussed in several chapters concerning eggs, larvae and adults. Polymorphism of color pattern and flight ability are the subjects for two contributions. In many chapters genetics and ecology as well as pure biology or natural history are prevalent themes. This book will be an indinspensable tool to anybody interested in leaf beetles as well as to specialists in taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography, applied entomology, ecology, genetics etc.

A Natural History of the Ground-beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of America north of Mexico
A. Larochelle & M-C. Lariviere
A summary of the natural history of the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae; over 2400 taxa) from North America north of Mexico is presented. Under each taxon, the ecology, biology, dispersal power, collecting techniques, and selected references are given. The section on ecology comprises the following: altitudinal distribution, habitat, diel activity, and gregariousness. The section dealing with biology gives details on seasonality, mating, gravid females or oviposition, tenerals, overwintering, feeding, predation, parasitism, and defense-mechanism. The section on dispersal power, or the capability of dispersal, has been assessed when possible, using three main criteria: wing condition, flight data (including light-trapping observations), and other locomotory habits. The section on collecting techniques provides the best means of capture. The section references lists the most relevant papers, with appropriate key-words. An exhaustive bibliography dealing with the natural history of North American Carabidae is also provided. This work follows the Catalogue of Bousquet and Larochelle (1993) Catalogue of the Geadephaga (Coleoptera: Trachypachydae, Rhysodidae, Carabidae including Cicindelini of America north of Mexico, which provided nomenclatural and distributional information on North American ground-beetles. An indispensable tool for anybody interested in ground-beetles, as well as to libraries due to the increadable amount of information summarised in this book.
