Prime Butterflies Areas in Bulgaria
Abadjiev, S Beshkov S

Studies of butterflies in Bulgaria have been carried out for more than 150 years. While the species distribution was more or less known, their conservation was not a special priority until recently. Previously the conservation efforts were mainly focused on a particular species (the decline of butterflies has been recognized for many years) and not on the areas which they inhabit. The main object here was to identify and describe the most important sites for butterflies in the country, implementing a simple method using target species, in order to help the definition of the Bulgarian part of the European Union's NATURA 2000 Network. Fifty NATURA 2000 sites are properly listed and described, and in this respect the book can serve as NATURA 2000 Guide for Bulgaria. The book is richly illustrated by color photos of species and habitats, maps, it includes species listings and data on conservation and protection, as well as basic GIS data on a CD. It is adressed to lepidopterologists, biogeographers, conservationists, NATURA 2000 workers and anyone interested in the nature of the Balkans.

The Lepidoptera of Israel. Volume II: Noctuidae
Kravchenko, VD Fibiger, M Hausmann, A Mueller, GC

This book is the second in a series that covers more than 1,000 species of Macro Lepidoptera of Israel, with complete and up-to-date information about their taxonomy, distribution, habitat preferences, seasonal activity and host plant interactions. This series is the first of its kind within the entire Near East that aspires to fill in a significant gap in our knowledge about the moths and butterflies of this poorly studied region.
Volume 2 summarizes information pertaining to 420 noctuid moth species currently recorded in Israel, illustrated with 38 life-sized color plates. In addition, maps of the distribution of each species throughout Israel are included. This book is complementary to the richly illustrated first volume that deals with 128 erebid species and contains 36 color plates representing the wide range of major habitat types in Israel. As well as being an important tool for butterfly and moth specialists, this book is also a good companion for nature conservationists, biogeographers, collectors and nature lovers. The Israeli Lepidoptera series aims to serve as the definitive guide for anyone interested in the nature of Israel, as well as of the Near East in general.

This book is the first of a series to cover more than 1,000 species of Macro Lepidoptera of Israel, with complete and up-to-date information concerning their taxonomy, distribution, habitat preferences, seasonal activity and host plant interactions. The series is the first of its kind in the entire Near East, aiming to fill in a significant gap in our knowledge of the butterflies and moths of this still poorly studied region. Volume I summarizes evidence concerning 128 erebid moth species currently recorded in Israel, illustrated in live size on 12 color plates. In addition, the distribution of each species in the country is mapped. The book is richly illustrated with color photos on another 36 plates, representing a wide range of major habitat types of Israel. The book is an imminent tool for specialists in butterflies and moths, being topical also for nature conservationists and biogeographers, collectors and nature lovers. It may as well serve as a guide for anyone interested in the nature of Israel, as well as of the Near East in general.

Ökologie einer aussterbenden Population des Segelfalters Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758)
Ecology of an Almost Extinct Population of the Scarce Swallowtail Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758)

R. Steiner, G. Hermann and J. Settele

The present volume presents results of a study on a formerly large metapopulation of the Scarce Swallowtail in South-Western Germany. In particular, habitat preferences of eggs and larval stages are quantified and the general decline and finally the extinction of the population is thoroughly documented. It is a typical example of the effects of insufficient conservation measures, which mainly resulted from wrong prioritisation and from ignoring available knowledge. The book is addressed to conservationists, butterfly specialists, entomologists, and population ecologists.

Yponomeutoid Moths (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae, Plutellidae, Argyresthiidae) of Israel
Gershenson, ZS Pavlicek, T Kravchenko, V Nevo, E

This monograph, part of the "Evolution Canyon" model research program, is the first overview of the 3 families, 6 genera, and 25 species of the Yponomeutoid moths from Israel. For each species, main references, diagnostic characters, including external morphology of the imago, male genitalia, trophic connections, geographical distribution, and comparative remarks are given. Keys to the identification of the Yponomeutoid moths from Israel to families, genera, and species are presented. The following three species are newly recorded from Israel: Yponomeuta plumbellus (Den. et Schiff.), Y. sedellus Tr., and Argyresthia conjugella Zell. The book is addressed to specialists in moths, collectors, biogeographers and nature conservationsts.

The Tiger Moths of the Former Soviet Union (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Arctiidae)
Murzin, V.

The present book is a monographic treatment of tiger moths, the Arctiidae, of the former Soviet Union. In covering most of the Palaeartic fauna, this publication is unprecedented both in scope and scrupulousness. Numerous colour pictures and several drawings richly illustrate the more than 100 species and subspecies referred to in the book. Identification keys are mainly based on peripheral characters, although in several cases genitalic ones are used. Many full colour photographs show pinned specimens (mainly arranged in 24 plates) and also a variety of live moths and/or their characteristic habitats.

Professor Vladimir Murzin (born in 1927), a nuclear physicist and Doctor of Physical Sciences, developed an interest in butterflies and moths during his childhood. Today, his collection of Lepidoptera is one of the largest privately owned in Russia. He is a member of the Russian Entomological Society, and is the author of several scientific and popular-science books concerning butterflies and moths and of more than 20 other publications covering ecology and entomology. He has made approximately 50 collecting trips to various parts of the former Soviet Union where he has discovered several new species and subspecies of butterflies and moths.
