Biodiversity of Western Rhodopes (Bulgaria and Greece). Biodiversity of Bulgaria, volume 3
Beron, P (Ed.)

TThe present volume of the series “Biodiversity of Bulgaria”, treating the Western Rhodope Mountains, contains 40 papers by 71 authors. It starts with a geographical outline. It includes general reviews of the Mycota (1,763 species of fungi), mosses (364 species) and algae (1,257 species, varieties and forms) of the entire Rhodopes. One paper each concerns the higher flora and the arboreal diversity of the Western Rhodopes. Most of the contributions (34) treat animal diversity, altogether considering 3,958 species of Rhizopoda, Nematoda, Oligochaeta, Acanthocephala, Cladocera, Calanoida, Copepoda, Syncarida, Amphipoda, Ephemeroptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Trichoptera, Diptera, Mollusca, Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, Insectivora, Rodentia, Lagomorpha and Macromammalia. For each of these higher taxa, regions and groups important for conservation, as well as endemics, relicts, protected and endangered species are outlined. The book is addressed to botanists and zoologists, conservationists, biogeographers, and all lovers of the Balkan's nature.

Biodiversity of Eastern Rhodopes (Bulgaria and Greece)
Biodiversity of Bulgaria, vol. 2
P. Beron & A. Popov (Eds.)

The second volume of the series "Biodiversity of Bulgaria" deals with both parts (Bulgarian and Greek) of the Eastern Rhodopes. The book consists of three articles on the flora (1962 sp. of higher plants) and 45 articles on the fauna (4329 animal species, both vetebrates and invertebrates). The volume contains also analysis of the zoogeography of each group, data about the relicts, the endemics and the sites of importance for conservation in the mountain. The huge ammount of information is provided vy more than 56 authors, both from Bulgaria and abroad. The book is indispensible for any zoological library, especially those collecting faunistic surveys, as well as zoologists, biogeographers, conservationists, collectors and lovers of nature.

Advances in Phycological Studies: Festschrift in Honour of Prof. Dobrina Temniskova-Topalova
Ognjanova-Rumenova, N. Manoylov, K

The Festschrift to honor Prof. Dobrina Temniskova-Topalova's 70th birthday includes articles by some of her current and former students, colleagues, collaborators, and friends over the years. The volume is a collection of 25 research articles on different aspects of phycology and is intended to reflect her versatile academic interests and areas of expertise. The topics covered by the papers include taxonomy, palaeoecology, physiology, and ecology of different algal groups. Some articles describe new taxa from fossil and recent materials of Europe, Asia and North America: a new genus Hyalosigma, fourteen new diatom species, and one new combination. Important patterns of the morphological evolution in extinct diatom genera of family Stephanodiscaceae in Lake Baikal are discussed. New floristic and taxonomic information on the distribution of the endemic Chara corfuensis J. Gr. ex Fil. and the tropical Compsopogon coeruleus (Balbis) Montagne is provided. Research on various biostratigraphical and palaeoecological marine and lacustrine basins, based on diatoms and dinoflagellate cysts, is presented. More specialized topics like uniparental auxosporulation are presented also. Careful analyses of the infection process in the green microalga pathosystem and an unicellular fungal parasite are discussed. A substantial group of articles focuses on the ecology of freshwater diatoms - redefinition of their importance in bioassessment, density and nutrient dependence of diatoms, and the use of new analytical methods like nonparametric multiplicative regression modeling. The book is addressed to specialists and students interested in taxonomy, ecology, physiology, biostratigraphy and palaeoecology of algae.

Biomes of Brazil. An Illustrated Natural History
Biomas do Brasil. Uma Historia Natural Ilustrada
F.D. Por, V.L. Imperatriz-Fonseca & F.N. Lencioni

Biomes of Brazil is a didactical presentation of the eight more important biomes of this subcontinent, for the use of the academic and student reader. The bi-lingual text of the book, makes it accessible also to the environmentalist and ecotourism public world-wide. The eight chapters follow the same sequence of treatement, from a short geologic and environmetal introduction, to the presentation of the respective flora and fauna and ending with human aspects and environmental issues. The most recent level of knowledge is being reviewed, leaving space also for new and original considerations.

The first author is emeritus professor of Zoology in Israel. He has lectured for 25 years also in Brazil, on subjects of nature protection and evolution, while first-hand studying also some of the biomes treated in this book. The second author is professor of ecology at the University of Sao-Paulo, where she is a forefront specialist in bees and in sociobiology. She is also involved for many years in environmental education and politics in Brazil. The book is exclusively hand-illustrated, with didactic drawings and schemes and especially with large-scale dioramas of the different biomes. Most of the illustration is from the hand of the third author, a consumate naturalist and ornithologist and a resourceful teacher.

Boreal Forest of Canada & Russia
W.O. Pruitt & L.M. Baskin

Our planet's green halo is the circumpolar taiga or boreal forest. This forest is remarkably uniform in its climate, vegetation types and animal types. All life forms here have evolved adaptations to the long, cold and snowy winters, the short, hot and dry summers and the swiftly-changing seasons. The same genera and families of birds and mammals occur in this forest type in Eurasia and North America. Humans have invaded and exploited these northern coniferous forests differently in Canada and Russia.

Although the history of human use has been different between the two countries the end results in both frequently have been catastrophic for vegetation, animals and some human groups. Such similarities and differences have been studied by biologists, human ecologists, anthropologists and other scientists at two research and teaching field stations in the taiga. Introductions to their work are presented here in both English and Russian in parallel texts. Such a format is ideal for students, not only of the natural sciences, but of both languages. This multi-level and inter-science approach has never before been accomplished.
